Pitt Mobile Science Lab

Our History

The Mobile Lab—a self-contained, traveling laboratory that allows students to use current, high-end equipment to perform laboratory investigations—is the latest exciting addition to a very active K-12 science education outreach effort sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences.

For the past 15 years, our department has offered a three-pronged approach that targets teachers, classroom support, and students through activities including: professional teacher training workshops; high-quality science experiment programs for students; an outreach education associates program designed to introduce graduate and advanced undergraduate biology students to K-12 teaching; and, our signature Pitt-Kit laboratory module loaner program, which has reached more than 33,000 local students within a 50-mile radius of the University.

Taking it to the streets

In an effort to reach additional school districts in need and to increase the scope and range of what we can provide, the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences has partnered with University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, The Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, The Lyceum Group, Thermo Fisher, and Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative to implement a mobile laboratory program.
